The 4 Common Mistakes When Installing New Gutters on Your House

Gutters protect your home from the daily onslaught of rain, snow, and moisture that the cloud-filled sky hurls at it. Over time, though, gutter systems see heavy use, and they suffer the effects of age, wear and tear.

The typical gutter system has a 20-year projected lifespan, comprising galvanized steel and aluminum gutters. When you replace your gutter system, though, you need to get a few critical things right, especially when it comes to installation.

In this post, we examine the four most common mistakes that arise when you install new gutters in a home.

    1. Not Properly Preparing the Gutter System

Whether it’s a total replacement of gutters, or just an upgrade to existing gutters, adding new gutters without properly preparing the old system can create a range of issues. There can be inadequate drainage to water spilling from the gutters onto your house instead of away from it. Without preparing the gutter system, it may not be properly secured in place, making them vulnerable to damage from the elements and animals.

It’s also necessary to prepare the gutter system in order to ensure a proper seal. Poorly sealed gutters can cause leaks, allowing water to penetrate the walls and foundation of your home and causing costly damage.

    2. Overlooking Gutter Angles and Pitch

Another common mistake is overlooking the difference in gutter angles and pitch when applying gutters to your home. This can cause water to pool instead of properly flowing away from the house. To ensure proper drainage and avoid any future issues, gutter angles should be carefully calculated and marked before installation begins.

In addition, the gutters should be pitched slightly down from the house so water can flow away from the property. Without the proper angles and pitch, gutters won’t function as intended and may result in standing water, soggy soil, and mold or mildew building up along the exterior of the home.

    3. Not Taking Proper Safety Precautions

When working on ladders or roof repair, you can easily slip and fall, which can lead to a major injury. Wearing reliable footwear, maintaining steady footing, and properly securing the ladder are keys to avoiding any major slips or trips.

It’s also important to keep any tools close to hand so you don’t have to move about on the ladder or roof more than necessary. Furthermore, having a spotter is always recommended when doing roof work in case of an emergency.

    4. Failing to Clean Gutters After Installation

One of the most common mistakes when installing a new gutter system on your house is failing to clean after installation. Over time, debris such as leaves, sticks, and dirt can clog and damage your gutters, making them less effective. Clean your gutters shortly after installation to ensure they are working properly.

Are You Ready to Put New Gutters on Your Roof?

When there is damage to your roof, the problem can create a domino effect. This is why as much as possible, you address roof issues right away, such as with your old gutters.

If you want to install new gutters on your house, it is important to be aware of the common installation mistakes to avoid them. Make sure you use the right size gutters, avoid cheap materials, have them installed securely, and use proper sloping techniques.
