Rounding out the list of movies released in the final three weeks is an odd one: The Last Emperor. A war film set in prehistory, The Last Emperor has a bit of history all its own. Some have also suggested that the caves hold the key to unlocking history’s mysteries and unlocking the secrets of the Earth and the heavens above.

This, I think, is what keeps audiences from tuning in for the showy, corset-esque goods and services of the last emperor. Instead, they stay in their room, relax, and enjoy the film as much as possible. The Last Emperor is a movie that has everything: action, romance, adventure, history, and a very unusual soundtrack. But it does not have the heft or presence that makes a classic film. It is a film that you might see on a festival bill, but you will not see in your local movie theater.

The Last Emperor follows the steps of Qin Shi Huangdi, who used his army to capture the most beautiful girl in the world and make her his wife. Afterward, he created a new empire that became known as the Qin Dynasty, which still rules today as one of the world’s most powerful states.
